Kim Russell reports on her trip to the Owyhee River.
The Middle Owyhee River, known as the Grand Canyon of Eastern Oregon is the perfect beginning overnight trip. Three days and two nights, the class II-V section of river winds its way through towering canyon walls in the desert of Eastern Oregon, an area that is considered to have the highest concentration of rattlesnakes in Oregon. Luckily, it was too cold for them to make an appearance while we were there. Four of us from Hood River, Oregon set out for our first multi-day of the year: Christie Glissmeyer, Drew Eastman, Jesse Becker and I. The first day was a mix of flatwater and Class III rapids, as we paddled 17 miles to camp in “Bombshelter cave.” The second day consisted of about 15 miles flatwater and a Class V rapid, Widowmaker. Day three was about five miles of flatwater to the takeout at Rome, Oregon. This was my first overnighter and I am ready for more!
